After November’s roadblock party with Ethyl, we are returning once again to rock the Horse & Groom to its foundations, this time with his production and DJ partner Flori.

Strategically landing on January payday, we have lined up the perfect recipe to coax you out of your post-Christmas hibernation – stacks of fresh and forgotten vinyl, an intimate venue and a massive soundsystem.

Flori

Jamie Mark Edward Taylor, or Flori when the creative mood takes him, enjoys nothing more than listening to, playing and making music that doesn’t make use of a noisy guitar. He’s also not too fond of 808 drum samples. This can get him into trouble when in the company of other house heads but shows his willingness to test the boundaries of his chosen genre – with often unexpected results. Flori’s musical know how – gained through a life on the front line – enables him to translate his soul, jazz and funk influences into forward thinking House music for the new decade.

It’s difficult to sum up in short Flori’s sound but the fact that he enjoys Bluey’s horn arrangements, Kerri’s basslines, Agnes’s beats, the way Kenny uses samples and when Cole’s tracks switch from 2-step to 4/4, should give you a rough idea. In other terms, Flori strives to unfurl a highly organic dance floor experience that can change in the blink of an eye yet retain a cohesiveness that belies his 24 years. With such a vast selection of music at his disposal, Flori is able to juxtapose four to the floor beats both old and new to put his own unique stamp on the genre.

Jamie (this was before the transition) has been a resident at and co-promoter of one of the UK’s most successful modern soul nights Soul Underground for 8 years. It’s a family run night that has provided Jamie with the chance to cut his teeth as a DJ and explore many different musical avenues. With an audience as comfortable on the floor with down-tempo soul and gospel as they are with nu-jazz and house music, Jamie gained a deep understanding of how to move a floor. The success of the party led to a string of bookings and his own internet radio show, The Underground House Sessions which ran live every week for over two years.

Flori’s first release, in tandem with Ethyl has already sent pulses racing. Gaining support from deep and soulful heads alike, the Trimley EP on Freerange represented the first of a host of releases including 12′s on the acclaimed Quintessentials and Detroit imprint House Is The Cure. At present, Flori can usually be found working on music in his cellar or at Ethyl’s house – often flicking through hi-hat samples or drinking gin.

Wax’d rolls back into town on Friday 18th November for its biggest party to date, with none other than rising London-based deep house star Ethyl. Armed with stacks of fresh and forgotten vinyl, the Wax’d team will take over the downstairs floor of the Horse & Groom in Shoreditch all night long.

We’re hugely excited to welcome Ethyl to headline the night, fresh from warming up this summer’s epic season of secretsundaze parties and rocking dancefloors across Europe with his unique and hypnotic take on house.

His jam-packed release schedule this year has seen him gain support from DJs across the board, with a personal favourite being the epic, rolling Aybee (Underground Quality / Deepblak) remix of Reflexions, released on Tsuba alongside production partner Huxley.

With a massive new release on upstart label Saints and Sonnets – including a remix from none other than deep house luminary Roman Flugel (Dial) – and an upcoming 12” on secretsundaze music with a remix from Detroit legend Rolando (Underground Resistance), his profile looks set to continue to rocket. ETHYL

Hailing from the leafy home counties and connecting with music at a young age, Tim Hopgood AKA Ethyl, displays a musical knowledge and affinity for the groove far beyond his 25 years. Like many of today’s finest, while constantly looking forward, he has one eye placed firmly on the retrospective. First taking to the turntables at the age of 13 and gaining his first residency as soon as the law allowed at 18, Tim has tapped into the mentality of the dance floor, crafting impeccable selections for hypnotic effect. These skills have seen him win slots at the Capital’s underground hotspots, across the UK and at Ibiza’s most prestigious venues before a production had even dropped.

This synergy with the dance floor soon began to find its way from the decks to the studio, when after completing a sound engineering degree, he began to realise his own unique vision of house. Whether on solo excursions or in tandem with pals Flori or Huxley, productions that bear Ethyl’s name are raw joints, both sonically complex and rhythmically commanding. The eclectic approach of Ethyl’s productions are maintained by a deep groove, with nods to early 90s US house & garage and effortless glimmers of Detroit influence.

Sassanids EP, Ethyl’s first production smash, with Huxley, on Cécille Numbers set the bar high and their follow up, The White EP on Tsuba sent the pair chugging rapidly up the house pile. Capping off an explosive production flurry with a release on the revered Freerange imprint, this time behind the desk with Flori, marked 2009/10 as landmark years for him.

Effortlessly leap-frogging the rat run of producers clamouring for labels, Ethyl’s natural affinity with the floor and devotion to sound design already place him among the hottest emergent talent. Now highly in demand from the UK and Europe for his tightly programmed, smoothly mixed sets have already seen him share bills with Ame and join a select group of DJs to have represented at London’s secretsundaze. Achieving so much in such a short space of time has not even dented Ethyl’s hunger, looking to push himself and his talents to the limit so as to share his vision of house with the world.

After an extended summer hiatus, Wax’d rolls back into town to kick off its winter 2010 season on Friday 5 November at The Gramaphone in Shoreditch.

Armed with stacks of fresh and forgotten vinyl, the Wax’d team will take over the intimate basement club of the Gramaphone in Shoreditch, just metres from Liverpool Street, Spitalfields market and Brick Lane.

Housed in a commercial building dating back to Victorian times, The Gramaphone displays original brick arches and stone slabs combined with wooden floors, a Funktion 1 soundsystem and a well stocked bar.

This space is the perfect fit for the deepest house sounds of Wax’d, as our residents dig deep in their crates for their unique blend of forgotten gems and modern cuts, with a number of special guests to be confirmed.

Get yourselves down early to ensure entry. See you on the dancefloor!

As summer edges ever closer, Wax’d rolls into town for a night of the hottest underground house sounds at the East End’s finest boozer-come-club – The Star of Bethnal Green – on Saturday 12 June.

The Star’s intimate, industrial space is the perfect fit for the deepest house sounds of Chicago and Detroit, as our residents dig deep in their crates for their unique blend of forgotten gems and modern cuts, all with a firm foot in the underground.

Our last few parties have been really busy, so get yourselves down early to ensure entry. For those of you wanting to watch the England world cup game, The Star will be screening the match beforehand (7.30pm kick off), so come early, watch the game and get your dancing shoes ready!
